We were pretty fond of this saw's little sibling, the RS500, but Black ; Decker has made a couple little changes that make this reciprocating saw one of the best choices a homeowner can make.
The homeowner, weekend warrior and avid do-it-yourselfer will love this as much for the price as the power and features. Its beefed-up 8-1/2 amp draw gives it all the juice it needs for whatever task you feed it, whether you're simply making cutouts in drywall or chomping through a pipe. The variable speed is great for the wide variety of projects you'll encounter, from 0 to 2,400 strokes per minute. Also high on our list is the fact that it weighs around 7 pounds -- if you've ever hefted one of the higher-end models, you'll appreciate the light weight, especially noticeable when you're cutting over your head and in other awkward positions.
We were surprised at the generous stroke length on this saw, too, because that means more aggressive cutting and more even blade wear for longer life. Also, you'll really be pleased with the tool-free Quick Clamp blade-change system; it's fast, easy, and foolproof. When you're cutting, you'll notice that the ergonomic rubber grip and the cushioning on the front boot really cut vibration and improve your control. The three-position shoe makes it easier on your arms when you're in awkward spots, too.
We can imagine putting this baby to use doing cutouts in drywall and studs for things like inset cabinets, cutting PVC for all kinds of projects--pipes during renovations, subfloors, joists, framing in a new door--you get the picture. This Amazon price for this very adequate saw is terrific! If you have need for a very high-end saw, then go ahead and burn some time researching and comparing Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Makita, Dewalt, etc. You can join the debate over which saw is best. But if your needs are less than commercial, I suggest: forget the research and the debate. Forget your perceived need for cordless. Here is a saw I have used 3 times(probably a couple of hrs total) since I bought it 5 or 6 wks ago. It performs very well, and it offers no inconvenience at all using with a cord. I own a number of higher end cordless tools, appreciate them, but I am so very pleased that I made such a great LOW COST choice for this saw that I expect will handle all the work I'll ever have for it.

I shopped around and this is a good deal.
The saw is perfect for most jobs an average
homeowner would have.
It is a good weight... not too heavy, and
the variable speed is a great feature.
It comes with a very nice case, and two
saw blades to get you started.
I am well pleased with it.
