Customer Reviews
I was recently demoing my shower stall to prepare for rebuilding it. I have a very good corded DeWalt reciprocating saw, and it certainly was invaluable for the task. However, it is heavy.
I became aware of this cordless reciprocating saw and thought how nice it would be if I had a lighter saw. I bought it and hoped it would have sufficient power to make me choose it over my corded model.
I am not disappointed. I'm not doing a side by side comparison -- I already know that the corded will beat the cordless technically. But practically, I don't miss the corded model at all. This Milwaukee Hackzall is so well-balanced, light, and ergonomically correct in every way (changing the blade, on/off button, etc.) that it has become my go-to tool. In fact, I think of other ways to use it to justify its existence in my toolbox. After all, I'm not demoing my shower stall all the time. Conclusion: it will be very handy as an alternative to my chain saw in cleaning up downed branches around the property. It's also a quick way to grab a saw to cut a 2x4 if I don't need the exactness of a circular saw.
You can't go wrong with the Hackzall, and in fact it may become one of your favorite tools. Here is the thing to be aware of. There are two types of batteries that can be used with it, one being the extra-strong version. I only have one M18 XC High Capacity Lithium-Ion battery that came with the saw from where I bought it, at Home Depot. Since it is the only battery I have used with the Hackzall, I can't comment on the standard battery. All I can say about the XC is that it lasts forever, and I will not need a second battery.
So if you think you want the stronger, longer-lasting battery, you should be sure to determine which battery comes with the Hackzall kit you buy. It appears that the kit sold by Amazon comes only with a standard battery. I saw that they had a promotion that threw in an extra battery if you bought a Milwaukee cordless tool, so for around $180 you would get the Hackzall and two standard batteries. I considered this in light of my option to return the Home Depot one, where I paid $200, and it appeared that I would save $20 and get an extra battery. I concluded that I would rather have the XC High Capacity battery and stay put. My guess is you won't go wrong with the standard battery. Maybe you will get a slightly lighter Hackzall in the process.
This is another great experience from Amazon and even better if your are a Prime member.
This is a great product. I use it daily as I am remodeling my basement. My most important point is don't even bother with the M12. I purchased the M12 originally and was so disappointed with its lack of power that I returned it the next day.
Second, the ergonomics of the design are great. It feels great in the hand and is easily used by one hand.
Third, the extended battery pack is essential. It is heavier, but you need longer power for extended jobs. When this is exhausted, you can use your original power pack for the 30 minutes while the extended power pack charges. Both batteries charge in 30 minutes. It will be interesting to see how the batteries retain charge over a two period of use.
Fourth, the blades are so easy to change. You just twist the blade holder and slip out the old blade and in with the new one. It uses the same blades as most of the corded reciprocating saws.
Fifth, this saw will not replace a corded reciprocal saw. My much larger Skill reciprocating saw still is the master of destruction when volume and speed of cutting are important factors.
Overall, this tool along with my Bosch 18 volt lithium powered drill are my two favorite tools I have purchased over the past five years. The only downside is the complete package with an additional extended battery is pricey.
